Possession

Fri 6 October 2017

Before films like The Witch, It Comes At Night and Anti-Christ became exemplars of what (rightly or wrongly) would be called post-horror, Possession blazed a trail for a kind of cinema whose chills were made up of creeping domestic unease and shocking eruptions of noise and violence.

Possession documents the growing paranoia of Mark (Sam Neil) after his wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) declares she wants a divorce. Convinced Anna is having an affair, Mark decides to investigate her increasingly erratic behaviour.

Adjani won a best actress award at Cannes for her mesmerising performance in a decidedly different kind of horror film.
