Praise be to Zardoz!
The Social Cinema continued its curation of Cinema Bizarre with John Boorman’s baroque, dystopian classic Zardoz. In the distant future, society is divided into the savage ‘Brutals’ and the godlike ‘Immortals’ who rule over them in giant flying heads. A Brutal called Zed (Sean Connery) stows away to the Immortals land where his primitive ways intrigue them. But does Zed represent salvation or destruction?
Combining grandiose philosophical musings with a high camp aesthetic, Zardoz is fascinating and ridiculous in equal measure, and all the more wonderful for it.
